Meet the Band - Will Allinson

Writer's picture: linked Instinctslinked Instincts

Where were you born and raised?

I was born in Enfield Hospital in London, but my family moved to Norwich when I was 4 months old, so have always been a Norwich lad, but there’s still a big London connection with family still living there.

How did you get into playing a musical instrument?

I picked up a recorder in first school and got addicted to it. I joined the school orchestra in Middle School, then got into grunge, indie and nu-metal. I got my first Ibanez electric guitar soon after starting High School.

What instrument would you like to play, but you cant?

A musical saw.

I know this is a tough one, who are your top favourite bands/artists?

Ah, I’d say Rammstein, Deftones, The Pixies and The Smiths are among my top.

If you could be a member of just one famous band, who would it be?

That is tough, I reckon Rammstein, performing in their live shows would be awesome!

What do you hope to achieve in 2021?

Publish some music.

Write a song on the accordion

Meet a seal

How do you write songs, what is the process?

I don’t have a set process as such. I just hear a little phrase or piece of lyric, maybe flesh out the whole of a provisional verse or chorus, then play around with the musical phrases in other ways, creating more clusters of music and lyric which are all linked in some way. Some of these parts just feel right, and naturally come to join up with others. Usually some common themes present themselves. Then will re-write the music as a whole, with the lyrics usually coming later.

What would your dream guitar be?

One that is punchy, solid, and I can properly lock into, but am not sure what guitar that would be.

Quickfire questions:

Blur or Oasis?

Blur (by a whisker)

Pearl Jam or Skunk Anansie?

Pearl Jam

Slipknot or System of the Down?

System of a Down (that’s a tough one)

Britney Spears or Taylor Swift?

Britney Spears

Guns N Roses or Metallica?

Metallica

Tell us something people may not know about you

I get irrationally irritated by the word ‘refreshing’. And when people pronounce it ‘filum’.

As I child I used to think I was spotting major celebrities walking down the streets. I also had a type of OCD where my hands had to be damp all the time.

I still harbour an appreciation for Thomas the Tank Engine.

I am dogged with indecision, which is why you have 5 answers.

I once badly fell-out with a friend’s hamster.

If you could pick just one song to play every time you walk in a room, what would it be? And why?

Well they’re not songs as such, but two pieces from the Medal of Honour Frontline soundtrack, ‘After the Drop’ and ‘Arnhem Knights’. Because they’re dramatically deep and poignant yet serene, they’re what I listen to in my head at the tail-end of a particularly gruelling run, they help to dig a bit deeper… That or ‘Vengabus’.
